This sea, globally recognized for its beauty, faces severe threats that demand an immediate response. The Mediterranean is the most affected by pollution, particularly due to plastics that are damaging its ecosystem. In addition, it suffers from overfishing, is warming 20% faster than other seas, and is losing its biodiversity at an alarming rate.

To address these issues, a series of activities took place during Bluewave Days 2025 that brought citizens closer to the reality of the Mediterranean. Between May 30 and June 8, more than 60 events were held along the Spanish Mediterranean coastline, from Costa Brava to Ceuta:

· Bluewave Day for Ocean Week: In Barcelona and Málaga, snorkeling activities guided by marine biologists were organized to explore biodiversity and clean waste from the sand and breakwaters.

· Collective Cleanups on the Costa Brava: In towns such as Llafranc, Llançà, Sant Feliu de Guíxols, L’Escala, and Blanes, beach and seabed cleanups were carried out to combat coastal pollution.

· BioMARató: An initiative by the Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM-CSIC) that promotes citizen participation in documenting marine biodiversity to improve its understanding and protection through citizen science.

· Guided Diving Course in l’Estartit: Alex Avello, ethologist and collaborator of National Geographic Spain, offered a course on marine conservation, biodiversity, and environmental communication at the Les Illes Medes Natural Park.

· Inclusive Diving Baptisms in Ceuta: An activity aimed at young people at risk of social exclusion, offering them the opportunity to participate in inclusive diving baptisms to promote marine awareness and social inclusion.

Bluewave Symposium

The Bluewave Symposium, the main event held in Barcelona, brought together renowned scientists such as Teresa Alcoverro, Michel André, Miquel Canals, and other experts, alongside entrepreneurs and companies like ISDIN, Caser, and Volvo Ditevo. This space promoted the exchange of ideas on innovation and projects aimed at protecting the Mediterranean, highlighting the need to achieve 30% marine protection by 2030.
