Mission Talbot explores the Talbot Bank, a Mediterranean underwater refuge supported by the Bluewave Alliance
Led by researchers and filmmakers Andrea and Marco Spinelli, this scientific campaign analyzed a seamount located between Sicily and Tunisia. Following the expedition, initial observations reveal an ecosystem with low human pressure, abundant biodiversity, and an exceptionally preserved food web.
The Mediterranean Sea still harbours ecosystems capable of surprising the scientific community with their high level of preservation. To study and shed light on one of its most remote and unknown enclaves, the Bluewave Alliance supported Mission Talbot, a research and outreach project led by brothers Andrea and Marco Spinelli.
Located in the Strait of Sicily, in international waters between Italy and Tunisia, the Talbot Bank is an isolated underwater elevation reaching depths of up to 1,200 meters. Its distance from urban centers has acted as a natural refuge against human pressure, turning it into an ideal natural laboratory for understanding how marine ecosystems function away from direct impact.
Initial findings from a Mediterranean in balance
Upon completing field exploration and data collection on-site, the expedition team was able to confirm the area's remarkable biological diversity. During field operations, significant concentrations of krill, schools of sardines, and tuna were recorded throughout the water column, along with high-value benthic habitats reflecting a robust food web.
The gathered samples and extensive audiovisual archive recorded during the voyage are currently under study by the scientific community. The ultimate goal of Mission Talbot is to produce a body of technical evidence to document the conservation status of this seamount, supporting future international protection initiatives.
The initiative reinforces the Bluewave Alliance's commitment to combining frontier science, exploration, and visual storytelling to protect marine biodiversity, serving as a reminder that safeguarding the future of the Mediterranean requires understanding and preserving its last pristine sanctuaries.
