Science, education, and ocean literacy at the annual European Marine Science Educators' Association 2026 Conference
The Bluewave Alliance supported and actively participated in the European gathering held in Barcelona to promote ocean literacy. During the sessions, key children's outreach projects such as "Peques por el mar" and the children's book "Keni, la pequeña ballena" were presented, highlighting early childhood education as a crucial pillar for Mediterranean conservation.

To reinforce ocean literacy and foster connections with the international educational community, the Bluewave Alliance had the honor of supporting and participating in the annual European Marine Science Educators' Association (EMSEA) 2026 Conference, held in Barcelona. The event was jointly organized by the Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM-CSIC), Plàncton, Divulgació i Serveis Marins, and SUBMON.
The gathering brought together leading international experts in ocean literacy, offering a space to exchange visions on the future of marine education alongside key figures such as Ronaldo Christofoletti, member of the UN Ocean Decade Advisory Board.

Outreach and impact from early childhood
In addition to outlining the Alliance's global purpose and collaborative model, Alex Avello presented two of our key marine education initiatives. These included "Peques por el mar", an in-school educational project developed across two editions alongside Oceavida, and the children's book "Keni, la pequeña ballena", designed to raise ocean awareness among young readers.
Both projects illustrated how environmental education and tailored storytelling serve as transformative long-term tools for marine protection. We extend our gratitude to the organizers and participants for creating such an inspiring forum to continue building collective momentum for ocean culture.
