Sea sponges are extraordinary bioremediating organisms capable of filtering thousands of liters of water daily, cleansing it of microbial pollution while releasing essential nutrients that fuel marine life. Located at Port Marina Palamós, the Bluewave Alliance supports this research pilot project focused on using the local sea sponge Chondrosia reniformis on experimental substrates to renaturalize degraded port environments. The initiative blends innovative laboratory attachment techniques with an advanced underwater morphometric monitoring system powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) to assess growth, reproduction, and ecosystem regeneration capacity at a microhabitat scale. By doing so, the project not only transforms artificial port structures into thriving biodiversity sanctuaries but also establishes a scientific and methodological framework that can be replicated across coastal restoration efforts in the Mediterranean.
