The Bluewave Alliance, a coalition of purpose-driven companies, institutions, sustainability entrepreneurs, and the scientific community, has welcomed over ten new collaborators to further advance initiatives that restore the beauty and health of the Mediterranean Sea. Among the new members are BSM, Fundación Banc Sabadell, and the Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM-CSIC), joining the movement driven by ISDIN, an international leader in photoprotection and dermatology. These new partnerships come alongside the announcement of new projects aimed at enhancing the protection and regeneration of marine ecosystems.

In this spirit, new members include Caser Grupo Helvetia, Volvo Ditevo, Nomen Foods, Tropicfeel, Guitart Hotels, Batera Brand, America’s Cup Experience (ACEx), We Are Water (Roca Group), and Studio46 Barcelona.

Alongside these organizational and institutional additions, the initiative has also launched three new projects: Observadores del Mar (OdM), Peques por el Mar, and Condrik.

The first, Observadores del Mar (OdM), aims to encourage participation in ocean conservation through a citizen science network to monitor the effects of climate change on Spain’s Mediterranean coast. Recreational divers will be involved through various centers and clubs in the region, gathering valuable scientific data. The initiative will foster dialogue about climate change and raise public awareness. OdM outings will be incorporated into diving centers through online and hands-on training, with leadership from the ICM-CSIC.

The second project, Peques por el Mar, is an educational initiative focused on schools, led by ethologist and educator Alex Avello, founder of the Oceavida Association. This project aims to educate and raise awareness in future generations about the importance of marine and environmental conservation. It will create a space to share and explain critical issues, such as plastic pollution, overfishing, noise pollution, ghost nets, bad tourism practices, and climate change, while also promoting small, everyday actions that contribute to the conservation of our planet.

The third addition is Condrik, a biodiversity and conservation project led by marine biologists investigating the status of sharks and rays in Spanish waters to encourage their preservation. This project was co-founded by our dreamer Charlie Sarria, a science communicator and contributor to NatGeo Spain.

These three new projects complement the ongoing work by Bluewave Alliance with other initiatives. A notable example is SeaSpore, which merges science, technology, and art to create a movement that raises awareness about the importance of marine conservation, using technology from Ocean Ecostructures. Additionally, the alliance is actively working to clean plastics from the Mediterranean, having removed 265 tons of waste through Gravity Wave between 2023 and 2024. The alliance is also helping to restore marine communities in the Port of Barcelona with Ocean Ecostructures, which has already contributed to the recovery of more than 30 species, and has replanted 23,000 seagrass plants over 2 km² in partnership with the Vellmarí Association.

In the audiovisual field, Bluewave Alliance and Odicean Studios have created Waves of Tomorrow, a documentary series highlighting the importance of Marine Protected Areas for the conservation of the Mediterranean. Looking ahead to 2030, the Reserva30 Project, led by Manu San Félix, aims to gather over 500,000 signatures to designate 30% of the Mediterranean waters as protected areas. This percentage is crucial because experts estimate that with a third of the sea protected, the remaining 70% would be able to regenerate naturally.

Since its founding in 2023, more than 5,000 people have participated in Bluewave Alliance’s awareness and educational programs. This number is set to grow in the coming weeks with the celebration of the third edition of the Bluewave Days in June 2025, the alliance's annual event to raise public awareness about the importance of protecting and regenerating seas and oceans.

Finally, as part of the Bluewave Days event, the Bluewave Alliance will open its new venue at the Port Olímpic in Barcelona, where it will host events with the scientific community and sustainability entrepreneurs, as well as underwater photography and art exhibitions, among other activities.
