The Tramuntana coast, stretching 85 kilometers from Sa Dragonera to Cap de Formentor, represents the largest coastal marine area in the Balearic Islands still lacking official protection, facing degradation from boating and recreational fishing pressure. To reverse this trend, the Bluewave Alliance is partnering with Marilles Foundation on a project to establish a Marine Reserve in northern Mallorca. By replicating international success stories rooted in local leadership and scientific data, the initiative will monitor the biological recovery of vulnerable habitats, such as posidonia meadows and coralligenous reefs, while measuring its socio-economic impacts. Ultimately, this project will demonstrate how marine protection drives tangible prosperity for sustainable tourism, local fisheries, and the coastal communities that rely on a healthy ocean.
