“Behind the Blue”: The hidden wealth of the Mediterranean is revealed at the Bluewave Alliance space

The exhibition, organized in collaboration with the MARE initiative and the Marilles Foundation, brought together more than 30 works by professional and amateur photographers. Through the impact of visual arts, the showcase invited the public to discover and protect the most fragile underwater ecosystems in our environment.

The Bluewave Alliance Space, located at Barcelona's Port Olímpic, became the setting for the local premiere of “Behind the Blue: A Mediterranean to Discover.” This photographic exhibition, promoted alongside the marine conservation initiative MARE and the Marilles Foundation, offered a visual journey that challenges the daily perception of the sea along our shores, revealing a wild universe that often goes unnoticed from the surface.

The collection brought together more than 30 images representing Mediterranean biodiversity, captured by both amateur photographers and renowned professionals in the field, including Alex Postigo, Toni Bertran, Nuria Bufort Costa, and Pedro Riera Llompart. From infinite posidonia meadows to creatures of extreme delicacy and marine giants patrolling in absolute silence, the works acted as a mirror to both the richness and the fragility of the current ecosystem.

Art with an ethical perspective as a driver for conservation

The initiative is part of the strategic vision of the Bluewave Alliance, an organization supported by ISDIN, to use creativity and visual arts with an ethical perspective to promote environmental awareness. By focusing on local species, the exhibition sought to dismantle the idea that spectacular marine life only exists in remote oceans, fostering pride and collective responsibility for our own natural heritage.

"Art has a unique capacity to connect people with the reality of our seas and oceans. This collaboration with MARE is an example of how we can combine different languages and communities around the same purpose: to restore the health of the Mediterranean," stated Juan Naya, CEO of ISDIN and promoter of the Bluewave Alliance.

Knowing in order to protect

The core message of “Behind the Blue” was based on the premise that effective conservation stems from knowledge and an emotional bond with the environment. By opening the doors of its emblematic venue to the public free of charge, the Alliance provided a space for dialogue and awareness where visitors could reconnect with the Mediterranean under the principle that we only protect what we truly learn to love.

With this project, the Bluewave Alliance and its allies consolidated a new initiative where scientific and artistic photography join forces to remind us that nature's greatest spectacle happens, precisely, just below the surface of our beaches.
