From Monitoring to Action: Bluewave Alliance pushes for real protection of the Mediterranean at the European Ocean Days
The Bluewave Alliance participated in the Brussels summit to demand that Marine Protected Areas have effective management and on-the-water resources. During the event, the organization officially joined the CO-WATERS coalition to strengthen the role of local communities in conservation.

The European capital has been the setting for a decisive week for the future of our seas. The Bluewave Alliance actively participated in the European Ocean Days, an event that served to confirm that while the challenges facing the Mediterranean are vast, the community dedicated to its restoration is becoming stronger and more coordinated.
Moving beyond "paper parks"
A central theme of the agenda was the EU Blue Parks workshop, where discussions focused on the urgent need to move beyond so-called "paper parks." The consensus was clear: the official designation of an area is not enough. Robust management and real enforcement on the water are required to ensure that Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) deliver tangible results in biodiversity recovery.
Data at the service of real impact
The event also saw the launch of OceanEye, a significant advancement in ocean observation. While the Bluewave Alliance celebrates data as the foundation of any decision, we insist that it must be the fuel for the European Ocean Pact to transition into a real and enforceable framework. We need tools that don't just monitor our waters but actively support regulation and effective protection.
New alliances and the power of narrative
In this context of cooperation, the Bluewave Alliance has officially joined the CO-WATERS coalition. This alliance reinforces our commitment to empowering communities across the Mediterranean basin, providing them with the tools to lead the change. Additionally, the docuseries "Waves of Tomorrow," produced with Odicean, was given significant visibility, using its imagery to remind us why it is vital to protect our natural heritage.
Finally, we celebrate Spain's leadership, as it stands out as one of the leading countries with the most actions registered in the Mission Charter for the Restore Our Ocean and Waters Mission. The energy in Brussels has been the perfect catalyst to strengthen alliances and return to work with more conviction than ever.
