The restoration of nature takes a step forward in Spain with the birth of Alliance for the Restoration of Nature. The Bluewave Alliance joins this strategic coalition, made up of more than 30 environmental, social and scientific organizations, with the objective of ensuring that the recovery of our ecosystems is a structural and ambitious response to the climate and biodiversity crisis.

The creation of this alliance responds to a key moment: the entry into force of the European Regulation for Nature Restoration, which obliges member States to implement national plans to repair degraded habitats. In this context, the coalition was created to be the voice that guarantees that Spain meets the objectives of restoring at least 20% of land and marine areas by 2030.

A Decalogue for Real Action

As a first joint action, the Alliance has presented a decalogue of fundamental principles. These proposals seek to ensure that the future National Restoration Plan does not remain isolated measures, but rather that it becomes a solid road map, based on scientific knowledge and with stable funding.

Among the priorities highlighted by the Alliance are:

  • Integration of marine ecosystems: Strengthen research and restoration techniques, especially in the marine environment, one of the most vulnerable and strategic areas.
  • Participatory governance: Encourage real collaboration between administrations, science and civil society so that restaurants are an engine of employment and local welfare.
  • Principle of non-deterioration: Ensure that recovery efforts are durable and are not threatened by contradictory policies or lack of protection.

The sea as a pillar of restoration

For the Bluewave Alliance, being part of this common front represents a unique opportunity to ensure that the future National Restoration Plan meets the objectives of the European Regulation, especially in the marine environment. The Alliance stresses that restoring our ecosystems is not just a question of biodiversity, but an urgent measure of mitigation and adaptation to climate change, essential to reduce the vulnerability of our coasts to extreme events and ensure the services that nature provides us.

With this union, the organization reaffirms its commitment to working hand in hand with the country's main actors, convinced that only through cooperation and political advocacy can the marine environment, and nature as a whole, be restored to the health and beauty that our planet needs.
